Learning to drive

Many people find learning to drive is an exciting challenge. However, there are a lot of practical steps to take before you are ready to join the motoring world.

You need to be 17 years old to learn to drive a car or 16 to learn to drive a 50cc moped.

The first thing to do is get a provisional licence from the Driving Vehicle Licence Agency (DVLA). You can get the application form from the post office or you can request one online from the Direct Gov website

You can't start driving or take your theory test until your licence has arrived, and you must also display L plates on the vehicle you are learning in.

You can only start riding a moped on the road once you have completed compulsory basic training (CBT) with an approved training body.
