Democracy at work in Bottisham

The 3rd of November saw students from Bottisham Village College take part in a "Democracy Day" aimed at finding out how young people can get involved in decision making and make their views heard.

The day was jointly organised by the college and locality youth workers who brought in a team from Citizen Arts to help facilitate the activities.

Around 60 students took part in workshops which encouraged them to think about being involved in the decision making process as opposed to just letting decisions being made on their behalf.

In one workshop actors from Citizen Arts simulated a residents' meeting about the future use of a piece of waste land. Young people heard different sides of the argument for developing the land and then had the opportunity to question the "residents" before voting on the proposal.

Another workshop explored issues that are important to young people and discussed how they could make their views heard and influence local decision making.
