Kicking Ash in St Neots
Following high numbers of young people smoking at Aspire Youth Club at The Bargroves, staff investigated what interventions could be made to assist and encourage young people to quit smoking – Kick Ash.
Kick Ash is a young person led smoking prevention programme for young people aged 16 and under – they are currently working with groups of young people in Cambridgeshire and Ernulf Academy in St. Neots.
Kick Ash were invited to attend a session at Aspire Youth Club to deliver an interactive presentation which involved young people visually seeing the effects of smoking and also test the levels of carbon monoxide in their lungs.
Alongside the presentation Kick Ash offer ‘Cessation Sessions’ whereby young people can declare an interest in quitting smoking and receive support in the form of appropriate prescriptions. Also Kick Ash has a fantastic initiative, in partnership with One Leisure, whereby young people are given a voucher for Impressions Gym at One Leisure which is worth £50!
So far 15 young people have signed up to Kick Ash and have started their path to smoke free lives – they have fed back that they feel that the vouchers gave them the motivation to replace smoking with an active healthy activity.
Cessation sessions are continuing with Kick Ash members of staff attending Aspire Youth Club once every 2 weeks to support young people and provide repeat prescriptions if needed.
