Hi there

If you're under 16 and want contraception, the doctor, nurse or pharmacist won't tell your parents (or carer) as long as they believe you fully understand the information you're given, and your decisions.† As you are 16 they would treat your request in complete confidence and would not tell your parents.† Doctors and nurses work under strict guidelines when dealing with people under 16. They'll encourage you to consider telling your parents, but they won't make you. The only time that a professional might want to tell someone else is if they believe you're at risk of harm, such as abuse. The risk would need to be serious, and they would usually discuss this with you first.

If you know your doctors surgery well, perhaps there is a doctor there that you feel more comfortable with or would prefer to discuss this with?† Sometimes it can take a couple of weeks to get an appointment with a doctor of choice but if it can wait itís good to feel comfortable.

I appreciate that you might prefer to go somewhere more anonymous where there is less chance of someone knowing you.† You can go to any young peopleís sexual health drop in where they will also be able to support you and prescribe the contraceptive pill.† The Lime Tree Clinic on Mill Rd Cambridge is your nearest icash clinic and you can click here to view information about their young people friendly drop ins and for opening times.† There is some very good information on the website that will help you consider your options.

Please remember that the pill will only protect against unwanted pregnancy (when used correctly) and will not protect you from sexually transmitted infections (STIís).†

Thank you for contacting me and remember itís really good to talk about issues like relationships and health with a trusted adult or to know where you can go for help in an emergency.

Best wishes and happy New Year!

Ali
