Job Description:

This company apprentice programme is a great opportunity to gain a recognised academic or vocational qualification from college, with on-the-job training giving you the chance to earn while you learn, whilst employed full-time with the employer. As a Highways Operative Apprentice, you will learn and conduct the main duties and tasks of a highways maintenance operative. You duties will be to complete various tasks in order to support the project team. You will locate underground services, including gas and power cables, working safely around them. You will carry out maintenance to the highway to keep roads safe and traffic flowing. You will install, maintain and work within temporary traffic management. You will work with a wide range of power tools and plant to repair potholes, replace pavements and lay new surfaces.

Training:

Successful candidates will be enrolled on a two-year apprenticeship programme, working towards a level 2 NVQ at their training academy while learning key skills on-site. Equivalent to one day a week. You will also have the opportunity to volunteer as part of the Duke of Edinburgh award.

Qualifications:

No formal qualifications are requested by the employer, as long as you have the right attitude and values of the company. You should be ready to work towards a Level 2 NVQ. No previous experience in construction is required but you will want to help them shape the future and build for a better society. You will be happy to work outdoors in all weathers and be a good team player. You will have a degree of work-readiness, including punctuality, an understanding of safety in the workplace, and willingness to adhere to rules and regulations. You should hold a driving licence or be willing to obtain this as soon as you are able - some sites are remote and driving will be an important part of the job.
