U Project Plus

This summer our U Project Plus group had an incredible residential stay at the fantastic Grafham Water Centre, where they learnt an array of adventurous outdoor-pursuit skills, alongside bonding as a diverse and supportive team.

Eight young people, from Castle School in Cambridge, and one young person, from Granta School in Linton, joined ten other young people from across Cambridgeshire to enjoy the delights of Grafham Water for three days and two nights.

Days held the enjoyments of canoeing; raft-building; high ropes; sailing; kayaking; climbing; power-boating; and archery. Nights held the adventures of ‘glow-stick lit’ night canoeing; youth work sessions; and midnight whisperings from young people well into the wee small hours…. (much to the dismay of weary-eyed youth workers trying to get some sleep!)

The group of young people are all school leavers in Year 11, although many of them have plans to remain in sixth form or attend college on vocational courses. This residential trip, facilitated by Cambridgeshire County Council, gave these young people an opportunity to learn new skills amongst familiar, and unfamiliar, faces. In doing so, they also followed an ASDAN course that will reward their efforts with a formal qualification in recognition of their achievements. This will be awarded to them at a celebration event later in the year.

All the staff involved in the trip are in awe of how incredibly well the group took to all the activities during the residential. Their sensitivity and support for one another, as a team, was also hugely inspiring. We would like to thank the young people involved for making the residential so successful!
